Black Gap Wilderness Management Area – Texas State Parks Camping At Its Best

If you are looking for a Texas State Parks camping experience that truly sums up what texas is all about you may want to check out the Black Gap Wilderness Management Area. The Black Gap has over 100,000 acres of land for outdoor activity in Big Bend Country. This area has just about every activity you could think of for a camping vacation.

If you do decide to go hiking, make sure to bring bottled water with you. On many of the WMA areas there is nopotable water so make sure you have plenty. Also, in the summer the Black Gap area can be brutally hot so be sure to bring sunscreen as well. It is recommended that you have a least a gallon of water per person for each day.

If you are an avid fisherman you can also go fishing at the Rio Grande. There is no closed season and most of the fish that are caught are catgish. You do need to have a fishing license so be sure to get that in order before you go fishing.

Perhaps the most enjoyable activity you can do at Black Gap is to go out and view the wildlife. There is an abundance of country to go see animals in their natural habitat. Some of the common animals include deer, javelina, bighorn sheep, black beer, ringtail cats and coyotes. In addition to that if you look skyward you can see seasonal songbirds, quail, hawks, peregrine and prairie falcons, as well as golden eagles. This host of wildlife can be seen throughout the park but the best way to cover as much distance as possible is by horseback.

As you can see there are many things to do in the Black Gap area but it is up to you to get out there and see it. Camping is available year round, but is most recommend to be done in the cooler months.
